The Losing Battle for Dignity...

Written 8-28-12
It is finally here! I have officially moved into what will be my home for the next 10 months. My apartment is very cozy and quaint. It is not so big that I feel lost and alone, yet, not so small that I feel cramped if I have visitors. The walls are a delightful light pink which strangely enough matches the puppy calendar pictures I packed to hang up here.  It is very cute and very me. There are Golden Retriever pictures EVERYWHERE. My kitchen is tile which means I can draw on it with dry erase markers! It is so much fun to be able to write on my walls. This will come in handy for when I cook and such.

This afternoon I got invited to play Ultimate Frisbee with some students, our leader and fellow team mates! As you know dear friends, sports always perk me right up (I have been suffering from a bit of homesickness today but am better now). I have never played ultimate Frisbee before, but I caught on pretty quick. It took my competitive side a little longer than normal to come out, but it did eventually. I accidently ran into my friend Hannah who was on the opposing team and knocked her glasses off in an attempt to block her. Then later on, I got knocked to the ground by my friend Andrew when his shoulder caught my right cheek as he unsuccessfully tried to keep me from catching a scoring toss. Nobody was hurt, but my legs will be scratchy tomorrow from playing in the grass and from falling a lot (thank you allergies). My feet are also quite dirty, though I scrubbed them very good in the shower tonight. Guess that is what I get for playing barefoot (again is anyone surprised at me being barefoot?). Though I was definitely not the best player (actually I was the WORST, let’s not kid ourselves) I had a lot of fun.

To make things even more entertaining, I had a classic Hilary moment later tonight. So Emily, Depreena, Tempestt, Melissa and I go to Dining Hall 3 for dinner together. I get my food first and go to sit down. The dining hall is big and circular. Many students are sitting down and chatting. The chairs that go at the tables are connected to each other in twos, so if you sit down on one without someone on the other seat and you lean over, you could tilt the whole thing. Well, wouldn’t you know it, but I sat down and accidentally leaned a little while moving my chair unit closer to the table when, PLOP! The stupid chair-unit tilted me right onto the floor in front of about 50 students! So there I am, the stupid foreigner laughing like a hyena on the floor while the chair unit is sitting straight up in the air like a beacon saying “look at me, the silly foreign teacher!” The students just sat and stared which made me laugh even harder. They all looked so shocked. Giggling and breathless, I picked myself up and righted my chair-unit. I was pleased to find, once I gingerly sat myself down again, that my soup did not spill at all. So my dinner was saved, even if my dignity was not. Lesson Number 3: don’t sit at the table without someone to balance out your chair.

All in all it has been a very good day (despite the homesickness). I have had a restful evening. I found my favorite book Jane Eyre in our resource library and after doing laundry, spent a good portion of the evening curled up on my couch reading and listening to the gentle rain outside.

So today we went through a confusing tour of our offices and got our schedules. China has taught me two more lessons today. Lesson number 4 is, don’t put your clothes on the ledge in your room. The window apparently leaks and during typhoon season water seeps in and will soak your carefully laid out clothes. Lesson number 5 is, don’t wear flip flops into the dining hall on a wet day. Those floors are slicker than snot. I slipped and almost fell down on my way in. At this rate, I will earn most clumsy teacher of the year award. I have a feeling I shall have no dignity left when I come back home.
To end on a happy note, our fearless leaders are taking us to an English coffee Shop and book store in a little bit. I am so excited!!!!
Till later!

Dancing Throught Life

This was our last week of training. Saturday, my team packs up and takes a 7 hour train ride to our city of Changchun! I have been extremely grateful for the hotel hosting us, but one can only take so much of a hotel room. I am extremely excited to have my own apartment, kitchenette and a washing machine. But it breaks my heart to be separated from those who are stationed in different cities. I wont see my Laura till ACT in Thailand in February! It is almost not fair. You get attached to these people and then you have to leave them. It is like leaving home all over again. These people, all 50 of them have become my family and I love every one of them.

We had Micro-teaching yesterday, and from the feedback I received, I believe I did well. Improvement is definitely needed, but for a first time teaching EVER, I think I did pretty good.
Today we had our last day of class and our test. I think I did pretty good on my test. I am finishing up my last paper which is due in a few hours and then I will be done! It is not really a paper, it is just me writing up my thoughts on a short article I read.

Tonight, several of us got together and went to the MAC to dance. My friends Andrew and Elizabeth taught me some steps to swing dance. Then two other people taught me more steps. It was so much FUN! I had worn flip-flops to walk around in, so I was dancing barefoot all night. Needless to say, my feet are KILLING me. lol But it was so worth it. There were about 20 of us all together dancing and having fun. I am kicking myself because I did not bring my camera. So I apologize for no pictures.

Dancing was definitely fun, but the best part of the night was the walk home. All 20 of us young people walked back down the dark streets of Beijing bringing light through songs of Praise. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. 20 voices (including my horrible one) lifted up in Praise to HIM. Not for our glory or gain, but HIS. Normally when I walk the streets of Beijing, I feel slight anxiety, even when walking with a big group. Mostly because it is unfamiliar and busy. But tonight was different. Tonight, the Father was truly with us and nothing could touch that or us.
The second best part was seeing the reactions of the people we were walking past. Their faces lit up and many applauded us. Correction, they were really applauding for HIM, they just did not conscientiously know it.

It is moments like tonight that remind me that it was truly the Father's will for me to be here. I am tucking away this memory for a day when nothing seems to be going right and I am discouraged. I will look back and be encouraged.

Hugs to all my loved ones!

The Many Wonderful Mishaps of Hilary!

So,
As many of you may know, I am not the most graceful person. If I thought that being in a different country would change that, I was wrong! These next few paragraphs are just a few stories of the shenanigans and graceless moments that have occurred.

The first day we were here, I was under a lot of jet lag. Apparently being a country girl means I don't know about these 4 feet high posts in the sidewalk that keep cars from driving on them. I wasn't paying attention and walked right into one causing my thigh to bruise up immediately.

Movie nights occur a lot. The floor where things happen is on floor 5. Mostly because many of us are stationed there. I am on floor 4 so it is only a staircase climb away to reach my friends Laura and Hannah's room. One of our crazy happenings was the night we decided to watch Tangled. Laura, Hannah and I were on the bed and Andrew was sitting on the floor. Laura decides to get up to get something, and when she came back, she thought it would be funny to jump over me like a ninja. She jumped and on her way over, smacked me in the head with her hand! She hit my head so hard she bruised her pinky! I of course was laughing from pain and the hilarity of it and she laughing while cradling her hand. A few minutes later, I was laughing at something else that had occurred and fell off the bed, much to the amusement of all. People who know me understand that falling off the bed, or chairs is a pretty common thing.

The next day I was coming out of the local Wu-Mart (our grocery store), and realized it had been raining. I was wearing flip flops and was calmly walking down the ramp with my armful of groceries. Well, my feet hit a wet patch and went out from under me! Some how I was able to go into a squat position and not land on my rear end in front of the entire street. I did not however, manage to corral the squeak of surprise that slipped out. So I had people looking at me no matter what probably thinking "Crazy foreigner".

That kid's face says it all..."what a crazy foreigner".

I think in my last post I mentioned how we went to the Forbidden City the other day. Well in the Forbidden City we also visited the museum of clocks...where I got clocked in the head by a shutter...yes, an ancient shutter.
Here is the story. There were these open windows and there was this beam that was lining the room. I decided to be like the cute little kids and walk the beam. (Some things never change) Well, the spot I picked to step up on happened to be right under the open window. And what was right there? The shutter, an ancient shutter that was still very sturdy, was what my head collided with. After a few seconds, I was able to laugh it off.

I keep hoping I will not be this ungraceful in my classroom. I can only hope that if I am, He will use my shenanigans to shine His light through me.

The Ramen here Just Tastes Better!

Today has been a pretty long day. I had a long day at the Forbidden City yesterday and we were in culture class for about 6 hours today. So I am pretty tired tonight. We had some very good discussions and watched an educational movie from PBS in class. I am loving the culture class we have been attending this week. It has been so enlightening!
We were served Western pizza for lunch, and my stomach decided to rebel against it. It basically told me:
"Hilary, make up your mind. Are you going to be feeding me Chinese or Western food?"
Don't get me wrong, my tummy and taste buds were EXTREMELY grateful for Western food. But apparently my tummy has just finally gotten used to Chinese food and today threw it for a loop.lol
Because of my traitorous stomach, I decided to stay in tonight and eat some Ramen I bought from the local Wu-Mart. All of my family and friends know how much I detest Ramen Noodles....let me specify, I detest Western Ramen. I LOVE Chinese ramen!!!! The package I get is Beef flavor, and it actually tastes like beef and the noodles are actually REAL noodles! I am quickly mastering the chop sticks which is a confidence booster. :)

My addiction is this place called Citi Drink. I am positively in love with their drink options! They are so fresh and tasty. So far I have either had or tasted:
Carmel Milk Tea
Grape Fruit Green Tea
Hawaiian Coconut Milk Tea (with chunks of coconut jellies in the bottom..interesting..)
Mango Green Tea (with chunks of mango in the bottom yum!)
Chocolate Smoothie (more like a chocolate shake!)
Coffee Smoothie (read coffee flavored shake)
Strawberry Smoothie (only had a taste of someone's)
Mango Smoothie (only had a taste of someone's )
Blueberry Smoothie (only had a taste)

(Obviously all of them are cold. It is too hot here in Beijing for Hot Drinks right now.)

Their menu is in both English and Chinese Characters which makes ordering easy. The girls let us point at what we want. Have never gotten the wrong thing yet!

I am also loving the Birthday Cake Oreos that they sell here. That is right, Birthday Cake! SOOO GOOOD!
Tomorrow is only a half day of classes! So happy for that!

I have some homework to accomplish tonight, so I shall sign off now!

Grace is the word for this year!

Catch Up

Dear Friends
I first must apologize. I have now been in China for two weeks and I have been extremely tardy in writing. In my defense, we have been kept uber busy acclimating ourselves to the culture and food and attending classes to get our certificates to teach.

I am loving China so far. I LOVE the food here and have very little desire for Western food.
I have so far had many first experiences. I have ridden in my first taxi, bus and subway....
Then we visited the Great Wall! Part one of my Mulan dream was coming true.lol
Last night, my friends Laura, Josh, Andrew and I all watched the Disney movie Mulan. We were able to pick up a lot of the subtle culture themes in the movie that we had not before.

Then today we visited the Forbidden City, which basically was the scene for the last battle in the Mulan movie. It was HUGE! There were courtyards leading into more courtyards and into even more courtyards. My group only made it through about 4 courtyards and then we went into the Clock Museum. I got clocked in the head by this ancient window shutter and took lots of pictures.
Afterwards, we took the subway back and got dinner. We had dumpling soup. YUM!
Then I went to the local Wu-Mart and got some stuff for the week.
It has been a LONG day, but much fun was had. I will write more soon and post more pictures soon.

Peace~
